Sparta Men Face Drug and Weapons Charges

Posted:

Sparta, WI (WXOW)-- Bond is set Monday for two men facing drug and gun charges in Monroe County Court.

The two men were arrested Friday after search warrants were executed at their homes at 600 Wolcott Street and 605 Wolcott Street in Sparta.

Sparta Police, in conjunction with local and federal law enforcement including the FBI, arrested the two men, after an investigation into drug trafficking and dealing in stolen property.

"It's unusual that we'd bring that many agencies together," said Chief Michael Kass of the Sparta Police Department. "I think we brought them together because of the impact. You know this has some regional impact because we believe that these men were affiliated with some crimes throughout different counties and different regions."

Police arrested 33-year-old Charles Poirer and 39-year-old Darren Philips, after Fridays searches were conducted.

"We believe we found a fair amount of stolen property from throughout the region," Kass said. "In one of the residences we found a short barrel shotgun, along with several other weapons."

Fridays searches were considered high risk and police used an armored vehicle and traffic in the area was diverted.

"In this case both residences had cameras facing the outside and we had watched the occupants walk around with hand-held monitors so they could see the cameras no matter where they were in the house," Kass said. "So that's an indicator to us that they're potentially prepared should the police come, and they're kind of watching for us."

Official charges have not been filed, but both men are being held $2500 cash bonds. Chief Kass says more arrests in this case are likely, but there isn't a public threat.

Poirer and Phillips will be in court on May 14th for an initial appearance. Charges will likely be filed then.
