Letter Carriers Food Drive set for Saturday

Posted:

La Crosse, WI (WXOW)- According to the Great Rivers United Way Compass report, 34% of area families say they have a hard time meeting their basic needs.

This Saturday you can help struggling families by donating to the 20th annual Letter Carriers Food Drive. Place items near your mailbox and your letter carrier will pick them up. The postal service and area volunteers will distribute you donations to The Hunger Task Force, New Horizons Shelter and Outreach Center, The Onalaska Food Basket, The Salvation Army, and Wafer.

Last year carriers picked up more than 100,000 pounds of food. Organizers hope to pick up even more this year. Great Rivers United Way President James Falvey says "If we can exceed that again this year that would be wonderful. There is not a single piece of food that won't go to waste."

Our local food pantries especially need protein items like beans, peanut butter and tuna, as well as baby food and paper products.

If you don't want to leave donations near your mailbox. You can drop off donations at La Crosse Fire Stations #2 and #3, The LaCrosse Post Office, and Center 90 in Onalaska. Volunteers will accept your items between 11am-5pm.
