Marijuana mailings on the rise in Western Wisconsin

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A growing drug trend has local law enforcement concerned.

The West Central Drug Task Force says they've seen an increase in people mailing marijuana from California and Oregon, to Wisconsin. In those states, medicinal marijuana is legal. Officers say they've seen large quantities being shipped through the U.S. Postal Service and other mail carriers. Just last month, an Eau Claire man was arrested for having ten pounds of pot delivered through the mail.

"What we're doing is we're working with the package carriers, if they call us and say, hey we got a hit out of Minneapolis, we'll send the package through, we'll get a warrant, and we'll make sure it is in fact illegal substances in there, and the packages do get delivered, and once they're in the house, we'll have their fingerprints on it that they accepted the package," says Eau Claire County Sheriff Ron Cramer.

Federal charges are then filed, since the marijuana goes through the federal mail system and across state lines.
