We Are Wisconsin held 29 Solidarity Kickoff events across the state on Saturday, including one in Madison.

Organizers at the Madison event, held at the Madison Labor Temple, is to mobilize support for Democratic candidate for governor, Tom Barrett.

Barrett will face incumbent governor Scott Walker in a June 5 recall election, in a rematch of a race Walker won in November 2010.

We Are Wisconsin volunteers went door-to-door Saturday.

The group's executive director, Kristen Cromwell, says they're trying to connect with everyday people.

"We're actually interested in being out on the streets and in the neighborhoods, talking to voters today statewide," Cromwell said. "We're gonna talk to over 30,000 of our neighbors and friends and have conversations about what's at stake, and the urgency about mobilizing everyone to go vote on June 5."

Some of the volunteers going door-to-door say the governor's policies have placed a burden on their families.

"My wife is a school social worker and I'm a teacher," said Chris Cummings, a Middleton High School english teacher. "So, collectively, between the two of us, we've lost about $12,000 of our take-home pay."
