La Crosse, WI (WXOW)-- Gundersen Lutheran gave members of the media a tour of the construction site.
"This is our new critical care hospital. And it's going to be approximately 400-thousand square feet of patient area," said Gary Schmuck, of Gundersen Lutheran. "And then on the very top of the building what you'll be able to find is a helicopter pad that will be able to bring in patients that have urgent needs."
The new building is part of Gundersen Lutheran's campus renewal project…which has been the product of a community effort
"We've had two to three hundred local workers here and we've been extremely proud and fortunate about the craftsmanship and the dedication by the local community and the workers on site," Schmuck said.
Many things in the critical care unit, the details are based on patient input.
"Well one of the things that patients want and always like is light," Schmuck said. "And so we've worked very carefully to make sure that we have a lot of window space for people to have a lot of light coming in."
The construction is currently in phase one.
"We're continuing to look at funding for that, but we're very hopeful that we'll be able to move into phase two right after phase one, and if that occurs, we're looking at another year of construction or so after that," Schmuck said.
That means the entire project would be complete at the end of 2013 or 2014.
