GAB Weighs in on "Verify the Recall" and Concealed Carry at the Polls

MADISON, Wisconsin (WXOW) -  Wisconsin's Government Accountability Board says the group "Verify the Recall" would have disqualified thousands of legitimate recall petition signatures.

"Verify the Recall" was set up to find fraudulent signatures on the recall Gov. Walker petitions.

The GAB says the group's software identified more than 2,500 legitimate names as fictitious.

Staff says the software also identified several legitimate addresses as being outside of Wisconsin.

Mike Haas, GAB Attorney says, "Addresses in MIlwaukee and Madison were struck as being out of the area. Jonathan spoke with a representative of True the Vote, who acknowledged their database may have omitted some municipalities in Wisconsin."

The GAB refused to consider the results of "Verify the Recall" in March, saying that under state law, third party groups were not allowed to play a role in the verification of signatures.

Local governments will have to make up their own minds on whether to allow the concealed carry of firearms at the polls for the Recall Election on June 5th.

Attorneys for the Government Accountability Board announced Tuesday (5/14) that municipalities have the right to ban those weapons, but the board can not make an official recommendation on the issue.

Members were split on whether or not it was appropriate to recommend such a ban.

"You bring firearms into a room, somebody's gonna get shot, just that simple," said  Judge Michael Brennan of the Government Accountability Board.

"Maybe my youngest brother would still be alive if he'd been carrying a concealed weapon, maybe my cousin wouldn't have been paralyzed if he'd been carrying a concealed weapon," said Judge Timothy Vocke of the Government Accountability Board.

This issue until its August meeting.
