
La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - A La Crosse man shot by La Crosse Police while trying to stab an officer in 2006, wants to be released into the community.
29-year-old Joseph Smith was found not guilty by mental disease or defect and was placed in a mental health facility 6-years ago.
Smith attacked a La Crosse Police Officer with a screwdriver during a traffic stop and was shot by another officer at the scene.
Thursday, Smith's attorney requested a conditional release.
Judge Dale Pasell has ordered Smith to be evaluated by two doctors before a decision is made.
His next court appearance is at the end of June.
