MADISON, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Barrett supporters hoped to celebrate at the Capitol on Tuesday (6/5), but it was a disappointing night for most of those who gathered on Capitol Square as polls closed. As it was during the rallies of 2011, it was a largely anti-Walker crowd.
They knew there was a chance Scott Walker would still be Wisconsin's governor today (6/6), even before the race was called. We asked how they would move on.
"You just keep working. Keep working with your local politicians to voice your opinion on the way you want to see legislature go. You just can't give up," said on Barrett supporter.
Another chimed in, "First, I think we need time to rest and regroup. And I think we've just gotta keep working in some form or some fashion. And I think people feel that way."
Things got a little testy when some Walker supporters came to the same corner of the square. Our WKOW 27 News spoke with the small pro-Walker group, about why they felt it was important to be there.
One Walker supporter voiced, "I have never, never been to a political event in my life. This is my first time ever. We're neighbors. We thought why not come. Why not enjoy this event; support our candidate who's gonna have another term."
While another said, "This is absolutely why we're here. You see this. [Points to his Support Walker sign.] It's okay for one side to have a voice, but anytime we want to have our say, we get covered up or shouted over. This is absolutely why we're here tonight."
There were a few tense moments, and many police officers were on the scene, but things never escalated beyond political chants and some harsh words.
