Floods cause evacuations in Cannon Falls

CANNON FALLS, Minn. (AP) -- The city of Cannon Falls is closing roads and asking some residents to evacuate due to flooding.

National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Griesinger says 8.4 inches of rain fell Thursday and is causing the Cannon River to rise.

Police say the river has risen 28 inches since 2 a.m. Friday and the Little Cannon River rose 39 inches early Friday.

The city notified residents who live near flooded roads to evacuate. Some are also sandbagging.

Griesinger says the Little Cannon River, which feeds the Cannon River, crested at 20.4 feet at about 5 a.m. Friday, breaking the record of 16.5 feet from September 2010.

He says the Cannon River was at 14 feet Friday morning, with a crest of around 15 feet expected later Friday. That record is 15.1 feet.
