Remembering Mark Schaitel

Posted:

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) ----- As you know News 19  is traveling with a honor flight escorting a group of Wisconsin Veterans who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Unfortunately we have some bad news to share with you.   Sparta native Mark Schaitel passed away while traveling with the group on his way to Hawaii.

Mark Schaitel joined the Navy straight out of high school.  He wanted to see the world, and wanted to see it while on a Navy ship.   His ship was coming into Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attack began.    More than 70 years later, Mark could still describe the attack like it happened yesterday.

He was so looking forward to returning with the men who like him survived that dreadful day.

Mark Schaitel was 89 years old.  The Old Glory Honor Flight Group has dedicated this trip in Mark's honor.
