Wis. elections board to officially order recount

RACINE, Wis. (AP) -- The state elections board is expected to issue an order that would kick off a recount in a recent state Senate recall election.

The Government Accountability Board plans to issue the order sometime Monday. The order would ask the Racine County clerk to begin the recount Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The recount comes at the request of Republican state Sen. Van Wanggaard. An official canvass last week found him trailing Democratic challenger John Lehman by 834 votes, or 1.2 percent of the nearly 72,000 ballots cast.

The county will have until July 2 to complete the recount.

The election is significant because the state Senate currently has 16 Democrats and 16 Republicans. So the winner will give his party majority control, at least until November's elections.
