Onalaska, WI (WXOW)-- On a hot day like today, many head to the pool to cool off. But for the lifeguards at area pools it can be tough to beat the heat.
At the new pool in La Crescent, lifeguards work eight hour shifts. To help them stay alert they spend 15 minutes at each station before rotating. One of those rotations includes a break inside an air-conditioned shelter.
The lifeguards say it's important they stay hydrated and wear sunscreen. And even when it's hot, they still enjoy the job.
"Even if it's hot, if the kids are behaving, and having a good time, I like to play with them as well," said Jeff Becker, a lifeguard. "So, it's a great time and the kids keep us entertained and keep our minds of the weather and stuff like that."
The new La Crescent Aquatic Center is open everyday from 1-5, then again from 6:30-8:30.
