Jefferson Award winner receives national recognition

La Crosse, WI  (WXOW) ---- "The Jefferson Awards" is a prestigious award that honors volunteers in the community.  Each month News 19 chooses one recipient and then out of those winners, one is selected to go to Washington D.C for the chance at winning a national award.

John Young is our winner for the month of February.  He's the man credited with transforming the village of Soldier's Grove.

For his work, on Tuesday, John received national recognition in the form of the "Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for Outstanding Service Benefiting Local Communities."

"It's really terrific.  It's such a surprise to me. It's amazing. It's really a terrific program." John said credits his upbringing and military background for his work ethic and as far as volunteering goes, he says it's a quick fix for the blues, boredom or if you just have extra time on your hands.

John has been volunteering for more than 50 years and he has made the most impact with Coulee Cap, an organization that helps impoverished families in four counties.

And in the spirit of the Jefferson Awards, John is living proof that one person can and will make a difference.
