CHICAGO, Illinois (WXOW) - A group of World War II veterans have returned from Pearl Harbor.
The trip, made possible by the Old Glory Honor Flight group of Northeast Wisconsin, took a group of survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack back to the place they were on December 7, 1941.
Cheering crowds greeted the veterans as they came off the plane in Chicago.
The homecoming however, had its bittersweet moment.
One of the veterans who left on the trip did not return from the journey.
Sparta native Mark Schaitel passed away during the flight to Hawaii.
Mark's cousins were waiting for the group in Chicago. WXOW's Amy DuPont presented them with a special gift-a flag flown at the USS Arizona in Mark's honor.
Funeral services for Mark Schaitel are scheduled for the end of the week.
