La Crosse, WI (WXOW)-- The two men accused of killing 20-year-old Sara Hougom back in March, will have separate trials.
Kong Vue, 19 and Pao Choua Vue, 21, are both charged with first degree intentional homicide, attempted homicide and armed burglary.
Police say Kong Vue entered Hougom's apartment to steal her purse and when he saw her on the couch he fired two shots. According to police, Vue admitted to the shooting.
At a motion hearing today a judge ruled to sever the two cases.
"There is no way a fair trial could be achieved with just one trial of the two together," said Judge Todd Bjerke. "Even though efficiency would be promoted by one trial, with the same witnesses, the same evidence."
Another motion hearing is set of July 27. The attorney for Kong Vue will argue statements made to police should be thrown out.
