LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Sweltering temperatures are heating up the July Fourth holiday in La Crosse and the rest of Wisconsin.
The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for parts of southern and western Wisconsin through 10 p.m. Friday because of temperatures near 100 and humid conditions. A heat advisory is in effect for far northwestern, central and southeast Wisconsin.
Riverfest officials are taking some safety measures for visitors to Riverside Park. Several cooling spaces, sprinklers and misters, and access to water in the park are all in place. Additional first aid staff is also on hand to deal with emergencies. So far, no cancellations are expected according to Riverfest officials.
Elsewhere in the state, temperatures aren't necessarily cooler near Lake Michigan where the U.S. Bank fireworks will light up the sky Tuesday night. Campers already spent Monday night at the lakefront in downtown Milwaukee to save a prime spot for the fireworks. A warm front stalled in the atmosphere to the north is preventing cooler lakeside temperatures.
