La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - Eight military brides received free wedding gowns due to a program called Brides Across America partnering with a local bridal shop.

Brides Across America began in Massachusetts as an effort to provide free dresses to military brides who have not had the chance to have a dream wedding because they, or their significant others, have been deployed.

Over the last three years, Charlotte's Bridal and Formal Wear have helped more than 100 brides find dresses for free.

This program is not only for brides serving. Women engaged to service men can also receive free wedding gowns.

"They give up so much for us. They leave their jobs, they leave their homes, they go and they serve in..horrific conditions. And for us to say thank you and help them with the financial burden as we can, I mean it feel so good," said Kathy Walker, co-owner of Charlotte's Bridal and Formal Wear.

Mandi Widmann received a gown. "It's great that Charlotte's Bridal does this and holds this event every year. It's a relief knowing that I can come home from over seas and have the dress that I've always wanted for my wedding," said Widmann.

The event runs July 10-11, 2012, during normal business hours. To participate in the program, you must present documentation proving that you or your fiance has served in at least five countries.
