La Crosse, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Mary Patros has been volunteering at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital for over fifty years. In that time, Mary has helped countless patients cope with illness. Wednesday, Gundersen broke in their new Integrated Center for Education (ICE House) by throwing a tribute party for Mary to thank her for her years of service. And, it appears that Mary knows everyone in this city, because the flood of friends and guests into the banquet hall seemed never ending. Even former Mayor of La Crosse John Medinger stopped by to see Mary.
When asked why she has done this work for so long, Mary said, "Its a wonderful feeling that your helping somebody. Make them feel comfortable, that's all that counts."
Mary added one piece of advice for all of us. "If you don't love what you do, don't do it."
