SPARTA, Wisconsin (WXOW) -  A Sparta man is lucky to be alive after his car crashed and then caught fire Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, 22-year old Kenneth Clark was driving on Highway 16 in Sparta just after 3:00pm when he crossed the center line, went into a ditch, struck a culvert, and flew into a hayfield. The vehicle landed on its wheels, but caught fire, which caused the hayfield to catch fire as well. A passerby was able to pull Clark who was unconscious from the vehicle right before it engulfed in flames.

Clark remains hospitalized at a La Crosse hospital, but the extent of his injuries are unknown. The crash remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff's Department.
