La Crosse, WI (WXOW)—Police are still investigating the two shootings that happened in La Crosse over the weekend. The La Crosse Police Department says the two incidents are not related.
The first happened in the 1400 block of Charles Street just after 2:30 Saturday afternoon. La Crosse police say a fight broke out between people claiming to be affiliated with different gangs.
The fight escalated and eventually, an unknown person fired a handgun into the air several times. No one was hurt. Police made six arrests, four of those, on outstanding warrants.
The second shooting happened just after midnight Sunday morning in the 100 block of south 7th Street.
Police say between 10 and 15 people were at a party there when a fight broke out. At some point, shots were fired. Police do not know yet how many weapons were involved. One man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police say this incident was drug related.
"We definitely, in the last several months, have had an increase in the number of heroin issues in the city of La Crosse," said Lieutenant Pat Hogan with the La Crosse Police Department. "So we've seen an increase in the use of heroin and along with that increase, we've seen an increase in some property crime."
Hogan says charges have not been filed in either case. Anyone with information on the two incidents is encouraged to contact police at 608-784-8477.
