Buffalo County (WQOW) - Another day, another important meeting about frac sand mining. Tuesday's meeting was a bit different than most... Because of where this sand plant would go.
Glacier Sands has a proposal for a sand drying facility and rail spur. The spur would be located near the Cochrane - Fountain City School.
There was a Buffalo County Board of adjustment meeting Tuesday night where a permit for the project was on the line. That meeting was held in the Alma School Gym.
And there were a lot of people there. More than 200. Citizens raised concerns about truck traffic, possibly up to 500 truckloads a day. But there were other concerns.
A big concern raised by residents was the potential impact the sand mining facilities could have on air quality and traffic near the Cochrane-Fountain City School. There are some who believe the enrollment could go down because of the close proximity to the school.
Mixed into the crowd were people in yellow T-shirts expressing their support with the logo of Glacier Sands.
Glacier Sands says its does plan to provide an air quality monitoring system.
The company says the new facility would create 30 new jobs.
That is the balancing act, these boards are weighing the boost to the local economy... With the concerns many residents have.
The board could have a decision made by late Tuesday night.
