LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The La Crosse Loggers and Gundersen Lutheran teamed up July 26 to "Strike Out Colon Cancer."
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.
However, health officials say it is easily averted with preventative screenings.
Before the July 26 Loggers' game, attendees received information about preventing the disease.
Specialists were also on site giving free skin and oral cancer screenings.
Organizers say events like the July 26 game help get the word out for preventative health.
It's just a good way of promoting awareness of colon cancer and talking about it. Because I think if you get out and talk about the more people will get screened," said Julie Gorski, a registered nurse in Gundersen Lutheran's endoscopy lab.
The night included a chance for colon cancer survivors to share their stories. They were also honored during the first pitch ceremony.
