BARABOO, Wisconsin (WXOW) - All through spring and American Legion baseball, Holmen continued to prove they're one of the Coulee Region's best. So, it's no surprise on Monday they were staring down their 3rd straight trip to the Legion State Tournament.
They would meet Onalaska in the final of the Class AA Baraboo Regional.
After a scoreless first inning, Holmen threatened in the second. With runners on first and second, Brandon Knutson turned on a pitch and sent it to the wall in left. The RBI double scored both runs. Knutson would go 3-3 on the day with five RBI as Holmen jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings.
In the fourth, Holmen struck again. This time, Ben Cejka ripped a base hit to center, plating two more runs. Holmen sent 14 baserunners across the plate in three of the first four innings.
Onalaska finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With bases loaded, John Wilson sent the pitch to the gap in left-center, scoring two. That would be all Post 336 could muster, however. Holmen won 14-2 in five innings, claiming the regional title.
"this is our 30th win today," said Holmen Manager Duane Vike. "This is a pretty good group... I think we've got some pitching depth, and if we get the ball to bounce our way a little bit, who knows?"
Holmen advances to the Class AA State Tournament, which will be held in Onalaska. They'll meet Post 336 again Friday night, since the host team receives an automatic berth at state.
