Holmen, Onalaska advance in Legion State Tourney

Posted:

ONALASKA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The rain Saturday may have dampened the field at then Onalaska American Legion, but it's hard to dampen the spirit of those playing for a state title. The washout on day two of the tournament meant second round action resumed Sunday.

After New London eliminated Menomonie by shutout in the first game, Onalaska met Beaver Dam in game two. Onalaska relied on a solid base hit from Phil Stuhr to add an insurance run in the 4th inning and later capitalized with bases loaded thanks to an excellent squeeze bunt from Brock Rude. Post 336 hung on to win 5-4, knocking-out Beaver Dam.

Rhinelander then ten-runned Sturgeon Bay to advance before Holmen took the field against Menasha. Only one run scored between both teams, that coming off the bat of Joe Vike in the 4th inning. Holmen ended the game on a fly-ball double-play, winning 1-0.

Because of Saturday's postponement, Monday's schedule is as follows:

12:00 p.m. - Onalaska vs. Sturgeon Bay
     Both teams face elimination
2:30 p.m. - New London vs. Menasha
     Both teams face elimination
5:00 p.m. - Holmen vs. Rhinelander
     Neither team faces elimination
