SPARTA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - An Ettrick man is in custody after leading a state trooper on a lengthy chase through two counties at speeds up to 100 miles an hour.
According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, when Trooper David McCarthy tried stopping a vehicle along I-90 for a cracked windshield, the car never stopped. The vehicle got off the interstate at Sparta. As the vehicle entered Sparta, it sped up and away from Trooper McCarthy at speeds of 100 miles an hour.
The chase continued from Monroe into La Crosse County and West Salem. The suspect's vehicle ran over a spike strip laid out by a West Salem Police officer. The vehicle then drove into a trailer court off of Highway 16. The driver then fled on foot from the car. Trooper McCarthy, along with a La Crosse County Sheriff's Department Deputy chased down the driver and took him into custody.
After the arrest the male subject was complaining of shortness of breath. Tri-state EMS was called and the subject was transported to Franciscan Skemp hospital in Lacrosse where he is being held overnight for observation.
The man, Austin M. Haas, 30, of Ettrick, was arrested on numerous charges according to the WSP including: felony eluding an officer, operating while under the influence, a felon in possession of a concealed electric weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and driving while revoked or suspended.
Haas also had outstanding Columbia and Jackson counties.
A woman in the car with Haas was not arrested.
