La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - As part of its project to safely and efficiently transfer spent nuclear fuel to dry cask storage, Dairyland Power Cooperative will be performing operations that will require the temporary closure of Highway 35 to motorists
The Highway will be closed for a short time started after 9:30 Tuesday night.
The highway is expected to be closed in proximity to Dairyland's Genoa power plant site for no longer than 45 minutes.
This marks the third of five canisters to be moved this summer to dry cask storage. The first was moved on July 12 and the second on July 27.
Closure of the highway during spent fuel movement ensures that potential hazards on the highway do not impact project operations.
The Genoa boat landing located on the south end of Dairyland's Genoa power plant site will also be closed during this same time frame.
The La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor nuclear facility has been shut down since1987, however the used fuel has remained on-site. Dairyland has been preparing for several years to remove LACBWR's spent fuel from the fuel pool and place it into a dry cask storage system on the south end of Dairyland's Genoa Site.
The fuel will be monitored around the clock at the Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation site, in accordance with NRC regulations.
