Final day of campaigning for senate candidates

Posted:

La Crosse, WI (WXOW)-- All four Republican senate candidates spent one final day out on the campaign trail.

The latest Marquette Law School Poll shows former governor Tommy Thompson with 28 percent of likely voters.

"I'm the only candidate that has won the state. I've won the state five times overwhelmingly," Thompson said. "And I've been able to bring Reagan Democrats and Independents across."

But Eric Hovde is just eight percentage points behind Thompson. Hovde is new to the political scene and believes that will play to his advantage.

"I've been in the private sector, building companies and turning around companies and spent his life in the financial market an understanding the global economy," Hovde said.

Then there's former congressman Mark Neumann, with 18 percent of likely voters. Neumann say he's hoping for a late surge in the polls, thanks to recent endorsements.

"The Tea Party Express endorsement was certainly very important to us and it's time to come home to the true conservative and vote for us," Neumann said.

And while Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald trails the other three candidates, he says the positive message he maintained throughout the campaign will pay off on primary day.

"I feel good because our campaign has seen a late surge here," Fitzgerald said. "And the polls that have come out lately show us on an upward trend. So I feel good. We're out there, a positive message, and I think we've benefited from the other three candidates going negative on each other."

But with 17 percent of likely voters still undecided, Tuesday's primary could be a close contest.
