High school group volunteers at garden

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) –  A group of La Crosse students are using their free time to serve the community.

The Aquinas High School "IMPACT" group participates in roughly 75 service activities throughout the year.

On Tuesday, the group visited the Kane Street Community Garden. Students tended the gardens and picked vegetables that will go to local food pantries.

The group's advisor and Aquinas teacher Mark Koehne says the student's excitement is refreshing and contagious.

"They know that volunteerism makes a huge difference in our society," he said, "and they step up to the plate and serve.  And that joy that they receive in serving radiates to others. And we all can tell that."

Besides participating in events such as working at the Kane Street Garden, "IMPACT" meets daily to deliver meals to the elderly during the summer.
