BANGOR, WI (WXOW)—The Village of Bangor Post Office is set to reopen Saturday, August 25.
The post office closed in January because of mold and water damage.
Since February, customers have had to drive to a local grocery store to check their PO Boxes and they've had to drive to West Salem to buy postage for packages.
Anthony Sherwin moved to Bangor just one week before the post office closed.
"It's been convenient for us to come here just because we shop here too," Sherwin said.
He hasn't had to adjust much to life without the post office.
But, Bill Cook has; he grew up in Bangor.
"I think it's great that it's reopening," Cook said. "The only thing I'll miss is coming out here and you could pick up your mail anytime where you have to plan it more with the post office."
Greg Peterson, Bangor Village President said moving the PO Boxes wasn't fair to residents.
"Like the lady who lives right across the street," Peterson said. "She doesn't drive so her son has to get the mail for her. There are numerous people like that."
He said it's important to reopen the Bangor Post Office because it's more than just a place to get your mail.
"You see at like 8:30 the same people every day, 4:00 it's the same people stand and talk...It's sort of like a community center in some ways," Peterson said.
"You meet old friends there and if you want to have someone come over or something you just tell them, ‘well I'll meet you at the post office,'" Cook said.
Peterson said he appreciates the landlord's decision to repair the landmark.
Contractors have spent the past few months installing new ductwork, a furnace and windows. The repairs were estimated to cost more than $50,000.
On Friday, August 24, all PO Boxes will be brought back to the Bangor Post Office, but business won't resume as usual until Saturday.
When it opens hours will be Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4, closing for lunch from 12:00 -12:30, and Saturday from 9:30 to 11.
