LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – Faculty, staff and students at UW-La Crosse gathered at the Cartwright Center Tuesday to remember one of their own – who should've been starting classes there today.
20-year old Sean Schoonmaker, of Stillwater, Minn., was killed in a single car crash August 24.
The Wisconsin State Patrol said Schoonmaker lost control of his car rounding a curve.
Tuesday, Schoonmaker's friends and family honored him with a vigil.
They said they want to remember him as a charismatic and outgoing person who was a neat freak – and didn't like any of his roommates moving his things around.
Schoonmaker's friends also said they remember his strong faith.
He was active in UWL's Campus Crusade for Christ Organization.
"There's obviously a lot of sadness, because of how much we miss him. We loved him, and wish he was here," said Schoonmaker's friend Pher Lois.
"But there's also happiness. Because he's with the Lord," Lois added. "So we've had to reconcile those feelings. I think the way we've done that is to come together as a community – a community that believes in Christ and loves each other."
