Murphy Library digitizes steam boat photographs

LA CROSSE, WI (WXOW)—Librarians at UW-La Crosse's Murphy Library are completing a four year project to digitize their collection of steam boat photos.

They sent 28,884 photographs to the UW-Madison to be scanned into an online database.

All of the photos were either donated or copied from personal collections of steam boat scenes on North American rivers.

The idea behind digitizing the collection is making the photos easier to find and available all the time.

"You can do some pretty complicated searching which was our hope rather than simply searching by name or by subject you can do cross searching and there's a lot out there," Paul Beck, Special Collections Librarian said.
