Sparta’s new Couleecap equipped to help more people

SPARTA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - At an open house Friday, Couleecap in Sparta invited the public to see their brand new home on North Black River Street.

Staff of the non-profit said the new office will give them the tools to help more families with programs including energy assistance and a food pantry.

The new building is even large enough to house the non-profit's food pantry.

"There's a lot of people that need the extra help and you don't realize it until you're helping these people," said Carol Davis, a Couleecap volunteer.

Davis volunteers twice a week helping people register for the food pantry.

Every Monday and Thursday, people come to the pantry in need of the month's groceries.

But if a family runs out of food, no matter what day it is, Couleecap staff said they'll never turn them away.  The family will get an emergency food basket.

"We don't turn anyone away. So, they get to walk through the food pantry and get food to get them though until the next pantry day," said Stephanie Rahr, Couleecap's food projects coordinator.

"Pride gets in the way of a lot of people," Davis said. "They don't like to ask for help. Even here, people come in and they'll sign up and they'll sit and tell you how they don't want to take away from someone else. Well, the program's here for everybody. You may need it one month, you may need is six months. It doesn't matter, that's what we're here for."

Couleecap is always taking donations. All donations can be delivered to the new office in Jones Plaza in Sparta.
