SPARTA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The Sparta community remembers Al Roberts as one of Sparta's biggest football fans.
Friday the community honored his memory with a new Gridiron Club at Memorial Field.
The Al Roberts Gridiron Club is equipped with locker rooms, trainer's rooms and a concession stand.
The new sports facility will primarily be used during Spartan football games, but also for community events.
Roberts' wife, Arlene, said that's the way her husband would have wanted it.
"We're hoping it will help the football program enlarge and improve. The interest has sort of waned because of so many other sport activities that this, I hope, will improve the interest in football for everybody in Sparta," said Arlene Roberts.
The new club is a community project. All the funds were raised locally. High school students even made the Spartan signs on the club entryway.
The Al Roberts Gridiron Club was open when Sparta hosted Aquinas High School Friday night.
