GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Everyone knows the story. Aaron Rodgers grew up as a 49ers fan, then was passed over by San Francisco in the 2005 NFL Draft. The Niners instead selected Alex Smith.
Two roads diverged, and both quarterbacks took the road less traveled. Rodgers waited behind Brett Favre for three years, and Smith waited seven years for the right coach to arrive in San Francisco.
With possible playoff seeding on the line Sunday, the two unlikely friends are sure to steal a spotlight or two.
Rodgers said, "It's been fun to be friends with him at 21 and now at 28, our 8th year together. He's a great guy and a guy that's playing at a high level. It was fun to be able to connect with him at the American Century Championship this summer."
The Packers host the 49ers in the season opener at Lambeau Field on Sunday at 3:15.
