ONALASKA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - After 37 years of business Happy Joe's Pizza in Onalaska closed its doors Monday. In an attempt to remain open they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October of 2011. In July, the restaurant changed its name to Pizza Pros Ala Mode. Despite the bankruptcy and name change, the business is now facing possible liquidation.
We spoke with two employees who reported to work Monday. They told us Monday was pay day. But they did not receive a paycheck.
Former Delivery Driver for Pizza Pros, Scott Campbell said, "If they would have told people, I think people would have maybe acted differently with tips they may make or any money that they may have saved. Because, the next day was payday. Although payday never happened."
Former Waitress Samantha Black added, "I owe rent money now. I have borrowed money from other people in between pay checks, so I'd have food and stuff. I needed to do that too. Its really the principle of it with this, because there are other people here that work there. Its not just me, this hit everyone. And, there are other people that have to care for children. I don't have that. I couldn't even imagine being in that situation right now."
We contacted Pizza Pros ownership, who refused to comment. The Western Wisconsin Bankruptcy Court has a Chapter 7 hearing in the matter set for later this month. A Chapter 7 proceeding involves sale of assets to pay off creditors in a bankruptcy proceeding.
