Candidates and Issues - WXOW - WI - US House - 3rd - Ron Kind

Ron Kind

Hi, I'm Ron Kind.

Our country has been through a lot in the past few years, but I'm confident that America is still the land of opportunity - where we can create jobs, prosper and grow the middle class.

We need to reward hard work.  That's why I supported tax credits to reduce health care costs for small businesses.

We need to invest in manufacturing companies that create jobs right here at home and stop tax breaks for those that send them overseas.

We need to ensure people are treated fairly.  That's why I support equal pay for women – it's simple, if you do the same job, you should receive the same wage.

We need to protect Medicare and Social Security.  That's why I've stood up to outside special interests to make sure that quality, affordable healthcare is accessible to all our citizens.

And we need to support our troops when they are deployed overseas and our veterans when they return home.

Solving our problems has to start right here at home. I will continue to be a strong independent voice for western Wisconsin. I ask for your support on November 6th

Name and age: Ronald J. Kind, 49

City: La Crosse, Wis.

Family: Wife - Tawni; Sons - Johnny, 16 and Matthew, 14

Harvard University
London School of Economics
University of Minnesota Law School

U.S. Congressman, U.S. House of Representatives
Former Special Prosecutor, La Crosse County prosecutor's office

Elected in November 1996, serving as an independent voice for the people of western Wisconsin.

Born and raised in La Crosse, Ron grew up on the Mississippi with his two brothers and sister, and his parents Greta and Elroy. During high school, he spent his summers working on his aunt and uncle's dairy farm where he learned a lot about hard work.

Ron was a standout student and athlete at La Crosse Logan High. He earned an academic scholarship to Harvard. During the summers, Ron worked for the late Wisconsin Senator William Proxmire. Ron helped investigate wasteful spending of taxpayer money. His research provided the basis for some of the Senator's famous "Golden Fleece" awards and greatly influenced Ron's commitment towards fiscal responsibility.

After earning his Master's Degree in Economics and a Law Degree from the University of Minnesota, Ron returned home to become a Special Prosecutor for La Crosse County. In the courtroom Ron met his wife Tawni, who still works as an official court reporter at the county court.

Ron and Tawni live on French Island and have two sons, Johnny and Matt, who attend La Crosse public schools. The family enjoys the great outdoors, spending time together fishing, hiking and on their farmland in Jackson County. Ron is an avid hunter, and Johnny and Matt are following in his footsteps.

Today, Ron represents the people of western Wisconsin in the U.S. House of Representatives.
