Sheriff tells board he won't discipline deputy in racing incident

Posted:

CALEDONIA, Minnesota (WXOW) - An update for you on the story WXOW first reported last week regarding a drag racing incident between a Caledonia Police officer and a Houston County Sheriff's Deputy.

Houston County commissioners are conducting their own investigation into the incident.

Commissioner, Justin Zymewski says Sheriff Doug Ely appeared before the Houston County Board of Commissioners Tuesday to discuss what happened.

Commissioners expressed concern to Sheriff Ely because they did not learn of the drag racing incident from his department, but from citizens.

The incident happened July 12th at the Houston County Airport.

Sheriff Ely told commissioners Tuesday that a deputy was involved, but wouldn't name the officer or discipline him.

That's because the sheriff wants to use the incident as a coaching measure.

The Caledonia City Council suspended the Caledonia police officer involved without pay for 28 days.

As part of their investigation, the commissioners will look at possible airport violations, loss of airport funding and disciplinary actions.

Commissioners will meet next week to discuss their response to the drag racing event.
