New police chief ‘excited’ to join La Crosse community

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Ron Tischer will not be sworn in as La Crosse's new police chief for another week, but today he was formally introduced to his colleagues on the Police and Fire Commission.

A captain of the Waukesha police fleet, Tischer said he's ready to take on the issues the police department is already tackling, like an on ongoing double homicide investigation in May's Photo.

"The police department has (done) an outstanding job and used a great deal of resources to solve this homicide, and they're getting closer and closer," Tischer said.

The new chief is not even on the clock and has been getting daily briefings about this investigation.

But Tischer said the first issue he wants to tackle is Oktoberfest.

"It actually starts the day after I get sworn in," he said. "I'm kinda the guy that likes to jump right into the line of fire, so I'll be out there with the officers walking around."

Along with crime and large events, Tischer said he will make sure everything he does is in the best interest of his police fleet and the community.

He is the first new police chief La Crosse in 17 years. According to Tischer, Chief Ed Kondracki's work is a lot to live up to.

"Certainly have shoes to fill," he said. "He's a great member of the community so it's gonna be a tough time to fill his shoes or fill the void left in the police department. But, we'll work hard to make sure we can do that."

On Sept. 27 at 10 a.m. Tischer will be officially sworn in as the new police chief of the city of La Crosse.
