Buffalo County (WQOW) - A frac sand company says it's deeply disappointed with a vote in Buffalo County.
On Wednesday night, the county's board of adjustment denied permits for the Glacier Sands proposed mine in the Town of Montana. There are studies looking into the potential impact sand mining has on your health. The board says it wants to wait for the results of those studies. Glacier Sands has four proposed projects in Buffalo County. So far, the permits for two have been denied, one has been approved and one is pending.
Unless the company appeals the decision, it will have to wait until the county's moratorium on sand mining expires to reapply. That moratorium runs through October, but there's a proposal on the table to extend it another six months.
A zoning committee is recommending the Buffalo County moratorium be extended until the end of April. It expects to have some results from sand mining studies by that time. The recommendation must be approved by the county board. The board will take it up in October.
Statement from Glacier Sands
We are deeply disappointed with last night's rejection of the proposed Seven Sands frac-sand mining operation. Glacier Sands continues to believe in and supports the creation of good-paying jobs and economic development for Buffalo County. Nearly 200 people, a majority from the county, recently attended our job fair at the Cochrane-Fountain City school and expressed a strong desire to work with us. We will continue to work with the county and explore viable ways to balance responsible mining with job creation for the communities of Buffalo County.
