MADISON (WKOW) -- Republicans are counting on a win by Tommy Thompson to help them take control of the U.S. Senate, but what once looked like a lock is now a big question.
Recent polls have indicated the race between Thompson and democrat Tammy Baldwin is even, or that Thompson is running behind.
Thursday, he drew clearer lines between himself and Baldwin on health care after a video was released with Thompson making a comment about "doing away with Medicare"
Thompson says the statement was taken out of context.
"If you listen to the whole thing I said we've got to stop Medicare from going bankrupt. And I am here to come up with a plan to reorganize it, and to refurbish it, and make it continue."
Democrats say they don't believe him.
Democratic party of Wisconsin chair Mike Tate says Thompson was, "speaking to the Lake Country area Defenders of Liberty, a radical tea party group who advocates expressly for the elimination of programs like Medicare."
