WEST SALEM, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The homecoming king and queen were treated Friday night to the Coulee Conference's premiere match-up. Black River Falls marched in on West Salem's party with first place on the line.
The game would go scoreless late into the first quarter. BRF struck first on an Ethan Young 2-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Panthers bit back. Out of the Wildcat formation, Shane Craig scratched and clawed his way in from about 15 yards out to even the score at seven.
BRF went to the air on their next score. Young found Grant Sittleburg in the back corner of the end zone for a sensational pitch-and-catch, but the Tigers weren't done in the second. With time winding down, Young hit Matt La Faunge in stride to make the score 20-7 BRF at the half.
West Salem kept the game close in the third. After a long drive, Jacob Ungerer picked up the final two yards to bring the Panthers within six. They would have one last shot with 9.8 seconds left in the 4th quarter, but Jacob Gerzsik intercepted Garrett Johnson's lob sealing the 20-14 win for BRF.
Young finished the day 14-24 with 208 yards and three total touchdowns. Ungerer carried the ball for 64 yards and a touchdown. BRF improves to 6-0 on the season, while West Salem falls to 4-2.
