STEVENS POINT, Wisconsin (WXOW) - UW-La Crosse entered the WIAC opener against UW-Stevens Point with plenty of good vibes. Not only does UW-L lead the overall series 43-12-4, but also last year the Pointers gave Joel Dettwiler his first win as Eagles Head Coach.
La Crosse trailed 3-0 early, but a 19-yard touchdown run from Ben Hertrampf corrected that. The Eagles took a 6-3 lead. Hertrampf however, left the game with what appeared to be a knee-injury.
The Pointers struck next on the first play of the second quarter. Mitch Beau found Theo Maglio on a 29-yard touchdown strike to take a 10-6 lead.
Later in the quarter, following an Eagles interception. Andy Sires threw a bomb down the field 41-yards to Tony Bilderback, putting the ball on the UW-SP 36 yard line. On the very next play, Jake Welch took the reverse hand-off the remaining 36-yards in for the touchdown. The game would go to half tied at 13.
Point took a 16-13 lead on a field goal in the third quarter, and it would remain that way late into the fourth. With a little more than two minutes left, UW-L engineered a long-drive capped-off by a Jared Stan touchdown carry. The extra point would be no-good, but it didn't matter. UW-L goes to 1-0 in the WIAC with the 19-16 win.
