LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Entering Monday's second round, only two days remained to decide which boys soccer team is tops in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
Aquinas not only entered round two still without a conference loss, they haven't lost in conference since 2010. A win Monday means they're in Tuesday's title game.
Only one team stood in their way. That was Sparta.
The Spartans held the Blugold scorers silent for a half, then lit up the board in the second. Tanner Helsel netted the Spartans first. Then, Jay Schroeder headed in the Evan Spaeth corner kick to make it a 2-0 Sparta lead.
Sparta added one more, stunning Aquinas with the 3-0 win. The Spartans advance to Tuesday's title game against Tomah who beat Logan 2-1 in double-overtime. The Rangers play Aquinas for 3rd place.
Elsewhere in the tournament, early goals from Jon Gonzales and Dillon Racicot propelled Onalaska to a 3-0 shutout of Holmen. The Hilltoppers will square-off against Central for fifth.
