MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - It's not every day you get the chance to enjoy super-aged, 28-year-old Wisconsin cheddar, but we met up with one person who got that chance, and her reaction is priceless!
In this segment of Wisconsin Dairy News, learn how you can savor a piece of history.
Teri Olver has a passion for aged cheddar. Her favorite is 12-year-old cheddar, but when asked to try a 28-year-old Cheddar, she was ecstatic!
And the verdict?
The rare cheese was purchased by Ken McNulty at Wisconsin Cheese Mart in downtown Milwaukee, when former cheesemaker Ed Zahn's son called with an offer he couldn't refuse.
Ken bought all the cheese that was offered, and now he's unveiling it October 6th at a tasting event in the store. Already it's made international news.
"Out of the blue I get a call from Ed Zahn's son," says Ken McNulty of Wisconsin Cheese Mart in Milwaukee.
"And Ed Zahn's son says that, 'Oh my father's retiring.' So I said oh, great, what ages of cheeses does he have? And he said 'Between 20 and 40 years old.' And I said, what?"
With a limited supply of 40-year old cheddar, Ken is only selling it at the store's cheese bar in small portions so that more people have the chance to enjoy it. The 28-year old cheddar is available for purchase in one-half pound wedges for $60.00 per pound. And according to Teri, it's worth the price!
And that's Wisconsin Dairy News.

"Wisconsin cheese is the best. This is fantastic!" Teri says excitedly. "I'm now tasting a little… like crystals in there now, which is great."
"When this came out, the 40 year went on the web; we were getting calls from all over the world," says Ken. "in addition we have someone coming…flying in from Australia to try the 40-year old, because we won't ship it!"
"I expected more of a harder cheese, this to me is creamy, easy to eat, very easy to eat," Teri explained.
"I feel so privileged to be here right now trying this old cheese. I am so excited right now! This is excellent!" Teri Olver, an Aged Cheddar Enthusiast exclaimed.
