COPY-UPDATE: Suspect arrested in Rochester stabbing

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Rochester police have arrested the suspect in the stabbing of a 12-year-old girl.

Rochester police found 31-year-old Dillon Caudill walking in the area of Marion Road SE and 16th Street SE in Rochester.

Caudill was arrested without incident at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Rochester police said Caudill allegedly stabbed a 12-year-old girl in the chest in the 200 block of Sixth Avenue Northwest at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

There was a struggle, and at some point, police said Caudill allegedly stabbed the girl and assaulted the mother. Caudill was an acquaintance of the mother, according to police. He fled before officers arrived.

Rochester police and the department's SWAT unit went to the 300 block of Third Avenue Northwest, where they believed Caudill was. A police dog led officers to an apartment building at 307 Third Ave. NW. Officers evacuated the apartment building to try to make contact with Caudill but he wasn't there.

Rochester police said the trail hasn't run cold.

"This was actually the tactical response," said Capt. John Sherwin. "There's always investigative resources that are taking place behind the scene. We have officers checking other locations, but the way we coordinated our response to this location, we had a strong belief that the suspect was here."

The girl was taken to Saint Marys Hospital. Her condition is unknown. The girl's mother was hurt in the assault but police said her injuries weren't serious.

A motive for the stabbing hasn't been determined.

Anyone with information is asked to call Rochester police at 328-6800 or contact Rochester Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
