CALEDONIA, MN (WXOW)—Caledonia community members gathered for a pool themed cook out at Four Seasons Community Center in support of building a new pool.
The fundraising campaign announced, on Thursday, so far they've raised $909,499, of $1.7 million, for a new community pool.
The new pool will have zero depth entry area, 150 foot water slide, climbing wall and new changing areas.
Pool advocates said all of these upgrades will make the pool more family friendly and get people to stay in Caledonia for family fun.
"Accidental drowning in children is still the second leading cause of death in the United States," Ellen Hongerholt, Pool capital campaign consultant said. "So it's really important that kids know how to swim and the best environment to do that is in an aquatics center or pool."
The center will be located on the site of the current pool.
According to the capital campaign, aquatics centers can generate 25-30 percent more revenue than a conventional pool.
City Council approved pledging up to $400,000 into the pool project in February.
They city currently has two general obligation bonds that are expected to be paid off in the next year.
Once those bonds are paid off, the annual payments for the bonds could go to cover the bonding for the pool project with the remaining funds covered through pledges and outright gifts.
If everything goes according to plan, Hongerholt said construction will begin the fall of 2013 and be finished in the summer of 2014.
