ROCHESTER, New York (WHAM) - An American soldier who was originally from Liverpool was the 2,000th member of the U.S. military killed in the war in Afghanistan.
A memorial service for Army Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Metcalfe was held Thursday in the Rochester suburb of Penfield, where he attended high school.
The Pentagon announced Thursday that the 29-year-old Metcalfe died Saturday in Afghanistan's Sayyid Abad district when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based in Italy.
Four more U.S. soldiers have died in Afghanistan since Metcalfe was killed in the 11-year conflict.
His father tells local media that his son will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
