MILWAUKEE (WXOW) – Wisconsin cheese lovers get to sample 34- and 40-year-old cheddar cheese on Saturday during a cheese tasting event.
The Wisconsin Cheese Mart in Milwaukee is selling the cheddar cheese, which could possibly be some of the oldest cheese ever sold to the public.
Store owner Ken McNulty bought it from Z's Cheese Shoppe in Oconto. The owner, Edward Zahn, found the cheese in a walk-in cooler this summer and said it had been overlooked so it was aged unintentionally.
McNulty bought about 20 pounds of the 40-year-old cheddar and about 120 pounds of the 34-year-old cheddar. He plans to sell it by the ounce so a lot of people can taste it. It will be going on sale for $10 an ounce.
McNulty said the outside pieces are crunchy because of crystallization and the inside is creamier and overwhelmingly sharp.
