SPARTA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - More details are coming out about a high speed chase following an armed robbery in Sparta late Monday night.

According to Lt. David Kuderer, shortly before midnight, a man walked into the Sparta Travel Center at 4105 Theater Road, pointed a handgun at the clerk, and demanded money and cigarettes.  The clerk complied and the man left without harming the clerk.

A few minutes later, a Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy saw a vehicle which matched the description of the suspect.  When the officer tried to pull over the vehicle, it took off at speeds in excess of 125 mph along Highway 16.

The chase went for several miles before the suspect crashed his car into a field near the intersection of Highways 16 and 162 near Bangor.

The suspect was identified as Anthony G. Keepers, 27, from Baraboo.  Due to his injuries, he was taken by Med-Link Air to Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse.  According to Lt. Kuderer, Keepers should be released sometime Tuesday afternoon.

When officers searched the car, which was stolen from the Wisconsin Dells area, they found a handgun, the stolen money and cigarettes, burglary tools, and other stolen items.

Sparta Police, the Monroe and La Crosse County Sheriff's Departments, and Wisconsin Dells Police are investigating different crimes and possible charges related to the case.
