Eau Claire (WQOW) - A second student has died as a result of the fire that killed a UW-Eau Claire student Monday.
A spokeswoman for a Twin Cities hospital says Jacob Clarkson passed away Tuesday. He had been in critical condition since the fire that broke out early Monday morning. His family issued a statement saying they are honoring Jacob's decision to be an organ donor. They also asked for prayers for their family, and the family of the other student who died.
On Tuesday, Eau Claire fire investigators, electrical engineers and insurance company investigators started examining what's left of the Water Street apartment where the fire broke out.
"Smoke detectors were present on the second floor, right now we're still looking at the functionality of them when the fire occurred, so we don't have any information on that at this time," says Deputy Fire Chief Scott Burkart.
Burkart says determining the cause of the fire is a long, slow process. He says it may take several weeks.
Student Ross Livermore, of Stillwater, Minn. also died in the fire. An autopsy was done Tuesday but results have not been released yet.
Statement from the Family of Jacob Clarkson
Today we said goodbye to our son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew and cousin, Jacob.
Jacob enjoyed life and willed that others would have the chance for life, too. That's why we're honoring his decision to be an organ donor. We are so proud of him – and we miss him more than words can say.
Thanks to everyone who kept our family in their prayers during this difficult time. Please continue to pray for us and also for Ross' family as we grieve the loss of our sons.
